I found an excellent article about setting long term goals online at Ian Corless’s blog and intend to use this structure for my own planning with a few changes. It’s well worth a read:

Race categories

I’ve decided have 5 race categories:

D race – Half Marathon
C race – Marathon
B race – 50km/50mile
A race – Multi-day / > 100km Ultra
A+ race – UTMB ’18

Training Phases

The plan specifies a training schedule that consists of 7 phases

The first four phases all take place in 2017 with a goal of completing an A race before the end of the year.

Phase 1  –  C/D race – Jan/Mar ’17
Phase 2  –  B/C race – Apr/Jun ’17
Phase 3  –  A/B race – Jul/Sep ’17
Phase 4  –  A race – Oct/Dec ’17

Phase 5 – Jan/Mar ’18
Phase 6 – Apr/Jun ’18
Phase 7 – Jul/Sep ’18 – UTMB Race
